The relationships of of Maul.
- Main article: Emperor Palpatine
Palpatine aka Darth Sidious kidnapped Maul from his mother when he was young to raise and train him to be his apprentice. Maul trained hard under Sidious, whom Maul gained some sense of attachment to and thus devoted himself to serving his master's will. When Maul was seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Sidious felt no real loss and simply replaced Maul with a new apprentice.
Over ten years later, they met again, Maul pretending to wish to serve Sidious again, but the Sith Lord saw through Maul and duelled him and his brother, the latter of whom he killed while taking Maul to use as he saw fit. He used Maul as bait to lure out his mother and kill her, and when Maul escaped Sidious no longer considered him a real threat.
Maul's hatred and bitterness against Sidious (and the Sith as a whole) spurred him to find ancient Sith artifacts to use to exact his revenge.
- Main article: Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is the Jedi who cut down Maul and his goals within the Sith. By his singular hatred for Kenobi, Maul survived though at the cost of his sanity (which was later restored by Mother Talzin) and he surfaced many years later to exact revenge on Kenobi. When Kenobi escaped, Maul tried again by recruiting pirates which didn't succeed either, until he and his brother came to work with the Mandlorian terrorists known as Death Watch. Working together, they formed the criminal syndicate, the Shadow Collective, and lured Maul to Mandalore, where Maul murdered Duchess Satine Kryze (Obi-Wan's old flame) and had him imprisoned to languish and suffer; Obi-Wan eventually escaped.
Maul eventually "moved on" from his vendetta against Kenobi, seeking revenge against Sidious above all else.
After Maul and Ezra combined both the Jedi and Sith holocrons together, Maul discovered Kenobi was still alive, and joyfully mumbled "He lives." as he escaped in his ship.
He began searching for his old enemy on the planet where their destinies first intertwined - Tatooine. But after weeks, perhaps even months, of searching the desert world without success, Maul used the remains of the Holocrons to lure Ezra to the planet and use him to lure Obi-Wan out. His plan succeeded and the two old enemies faced each other for what would be the last time. Maul mocked Obi-Wan for having been reduced to "a rat in the desert" while Obi-Wan felt he had risen above Maul, simply as a person. While Maul had come to kill the Jedi he considered "leaving [him] to [his] squalor" and Obi-Wan lectured Maul that the more he took the less he would have. Maul then puzzled why Obi-Wan would return to this desolate world... unless he had a purpose and correctly deduced Obi-Wan was protecting someone - It was only then did the Jedi Master ignite his lightsaber and the two faced each other. For a few long moments, both stood still, daring the other to take the first move. But when Obi-Wan took the Ataru ready-stance, which Maul recognize,d he finally made the first move and attacked. They traded only a few blows before Maul attempted the same technique he'd used thirty years earlier to kill Qui-gonn, Obi-wan's master, but Obi-wan had anticipated this and used an overhead blow to cut Maul's saber in half and strike a fatal blow on Maul's chest. As Maul fell to the ground, Obi-wan cradled his old enemy in his arms and Maul asked if Obi-Wan was protecting the Chosen One. Obi-wan confirmed this, and with his final breath, Maul expressed a measure of peace and closure, content to know "[Luke would] avenge [Maul and Obi-wan]". Out of respect, Obi-wan closed his fallen foe's eyes.
- Main article: Hondo Ohnaka
Maul briefly fought Ohnaka's pirate crew during the Clone Wars, having attempted to enlist them in his efforts to built a galactic criminal empire. However, due to the intervention of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hondo was able to defeat those of his men who had sided with Maul and get many of them back under his command, while Maul and his brother Savage Opress were forced to flee, leading to their eventual alliance with the Death Watch. Maul and Hondo are not known to have interacted since.
- Main article: Ahsoka Tano
- “Running away again, Lady Tano?”
- ―Maul to Ahsoka when she went after Ezra[src]
Sixteen years later, they came face-to-face once again on Malachor. Ahsoka hesitated to team up with him, but reluctantly agreed. Maul later attacked Ahsoka, but the former was left to fight Kanan. Maul was shown to think little of Ahsoka, as he called her things such as "part-timer" and "Lady Tano" in mockery of her departure from the Jedi Order.
- Main article: Ezra Bridger
- “Forget the past! Forget your memories! Forget your attachments. Our futures converge on a planet with two suns. We can walk that path together! As friends. As brothers.”
- ―Maul trying to convince Ezra to come with him.[src]
When they met, Maul pretended to be a weak old outcast and won Ezra's sympathy by sharing his losses at the hands of the Sith, which Ezra related to after his parents' deaths. He slowly but surely gained the boy's confidence and pressured him into opening himself to the Dark Side for power and revenge even though Ezra claimed he just wanted justice.
Together they succeeded in taking the Sith Holocron from the Temple of Malachor, and Ezra insisted Maul was on their side. Maul shared more secrets of the Dark Side with Ezra, but was disappointed when Ezra refused to strike down the Seventh Sister, leading the former Sith to kill her himself, and admonish Ezra that his hesitation could cost him his life and lives of his friends.
It soon became clear that Maul was indeed using Ezra and sought to have him as his apprentice, but was thwarted by Ezra's master, Kanan. Despite using him, Maul seemed to have a slight fondness for Ezra, expressing confidence in the boy's abilities and even saving his life twice.
Ezra would soon realize for certain that Maul used him, since his teacher was blinded by Maul, but the darkness of the former Sith Lord certainly left its corruption on Ezra, as he was able to open the Sith Holocron, something only capable of through Sith teachings.
Even after his lies and deceit have been made known to Ezra, Maul still regarded Ezra as his apprentice and had no qualms holding his friends hostage to get the Sith Holocron (and had no intentions of honoring the agreement of the holocron for the Ghost crew's safety, as he ordered his droids to execute them while he kept Ezra preoccupied).
According to Maul's voice actor, Sam Witker, Maul desired Ezra not only as an apprentice, but as a "brother of some sort", indicating that his apparent fondness for Ezra was genuine. However, he goes on to say that this was from a selfish motivation.
After Ezra made it clear that he would never be Maul's apprentice and refused to abandon his friends, Maul finally saw that the bond he thought the two shared was one-sided and scorned Ezra by expressing his disappointment and mockingly laughed, leaving Ezra behind and going on to find Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- Main article: Kanan Jarrus
Kanan did not trust Maul even though Ezra insisted the former Sith was on their side, and only tolerated Maul when Ahsoka (reluctantly) agreed they could use Maul's aid.
But once Maul made his true intentions known, that he intended to take Ezra away from him, he struck Kanan with his saber, blinding him, and would have killed him had Ahsoka not defended him. Kanan found an old Temple Guard mask to cover his ruined eyes and stood up to face the deceiver again. Maul arrogantly underestimated Kanan, believing killing him would be quick and easy.
But Kanan remembered his Jedi training, trusted his senses amplified by the Force, and not only bested Maul but thwarted his plans by sending him falling over the edge of the sith temple terrace.
Somehow, Maul learned of Kanan's former identity, Caleb Dume, and after blackmailing Kanan and Ezra for the Sith Holocron in exchange for the lives of the Ghost crew, he split the two up in order to attempt to kill Kanan again (but Kanan was able to survive Maul's attempt).
Maul saw Kanan as an obstacle between him and Ezra (who he considers his own apprentice) but twice underestimated him.
- Main article: Inquisitors
The three Inquisitors, now deceased, are fully familiar with the tales of Darth Sidious' former apprentice Darth Maul. As announced by The Seventh Sister, rumors of Maul surviving spread. What was not touched on was his time as a prisoner of The Spire on Stygeon Prime or how he escaped. Darth Vader, likely from the word of mouth of his master Darth Sidious, knew Maul was alive and in hiding. Until the finale, his location remained a mystery. Although, as Maul explained, he no longer dons the mantle of Darth, severing his ties to the Sith, and serving as his own master. As he wished to do with his brother, Savage Oppress, so long ago.
Named as a traitor to the Sith, and proving he wishes to see fellow members of the Dark side suffer, The Inquisitors attacked Maul simultaneously. In turn, each one was beaten back as Maul dropped his feeble old man rouse, and showed the young Inquisitors the true might of a Sith. All the while toying with them for his own amusement. In his prime or as an aged man, Maul proved himself a caliber higher than the acolytes of Darth Vader. His skills in combat remain unrivaled by most. His ruthless and detached nature, coupled by his strong desire to see his former master crippled, fuel his strength and left him as the victor as he eliminated The Inquisitor's one at a time. The youngest Inquisitor meeting his end by falling off the temple.
