Stormtroopers were the foot soldiers of the Galactic Empire, tasked with enforcing order throughout the galaxy. They wore armor similar to that of the clone troopers of the Old Republic, and were considered the spiritual successors to the clone army. The similarity ended there, however; stormtroopers were much less trained and less efficient as soldiers. They were enlisted from various corners of the galaxy, resulting in mixed quality, and were not as creative or effective in battle. As a result, many clones felt disgusted by them, and despised the fact that their military legacy had been reduced to an army of poor recruits. Certain stormtrooper units were, however, better trained and a formidable force in battle. All troopers struck fear into general populice, allowing the Empire to take control over numerous populations.
The clone troopers were grown on the world of Kamino, being cloned from a single cell of Jango Fett. During that period, they served for the Grand Army of the Republic alongside Jedi knights, and were deployed to fight against the Confederacy of Independent Systems in the intergalactic conflict that became known as the Clone Wars.
In the last months of the war, the Kamino clones were supplemented with other troops grown from various templates. Following the formation of the Galactic Empire and the end of the Clone Wars, the clones were rebranded as Imperial Stormtroopers, serving as the first generation of the Empire's new soldiers.
In the years to come, the Empire would gradually phase out cloned troops and transition to human recruits as their primary infantry. Some clone troopers remained loyal to the Old Republic as a result of their inhibitor-chips being removed, helping to form the Rebellion, while others remained victims of the Emperor's deceitful manipulation.
Stationed on Lothal
Stormtrooper armies were stationed on outer rim planets such as Lothal, where they have on occasion encountered and engaged the Rebels of Lothal.
While patrolling a TIE Fighter landing platform, two Stormtroopers caught Sabine vandalizing a fighter with graffiti art and threatened to shoot her. However, she managed to slip away mocking them. Even though they brought in reinforcements, Sabine still got away and left behind an explosive surprise for them, which covered them in purple paint.
Two Stormtroopers were interrogating a civilian and when they threatened to arrest him, Zeb the Lasat knocked them both out by bashing their heads together. However more troopers showed up and engaged Zeb in physical combat. One by one they were easily beaten as more showed up and opened fire. Their random firing caused a leak in a Fighter's fuel tank and one blast from their blasters ignited the fuel, blowing up everything and everyone with it.
Spark of Rebellion
Stormtroopers were assigned as security aboard an Imperial Transport ship where the Rebels attempted to board and rescue Wookiee prisoners. they Infiltrated by saying their were bringing in an additional Wookiee.
Two Stormtroopers showed up at the airlock where Kanan and Sabine presented Zeb as a rare hairless Wookiee. Unfortunately they didn't buy it, only because Zeb didn't give them a chance and took them out with a single punch against their heads. Little did the Rebels know they were walking into a trap and when both ships were captured by an Imperial Star Destroyer, a squadron of Stormtroopers accompanied Agent Kallus to board and capture the Rebels. However, they got away, but with Kallus they were able to capture Ezra, confiscated his belongings and locked him in a cell.
Ezra later escaped from his prison when he tricked two Stormtroopers who were guarding his cell thinking he was passing out while complaining and saying things, like he's the Emperor's nephew. When they came in to investigate, Ezra slipped by them and locked them inside. When the Rebels returned to rescue Ezra, Kallus led a squadron to prevent them from escaping but once again they were outwitted when Sabine exploded a hole in the ship. Several troops were lost in the vacuum of space.
The Stormtroopers accompanied Kallus to Kessel where they ambush the Rebels trying to rescue Wookiee Prisoners. It was here, they discovered that their leader, Kanan Jarrus was a Jedi after deploying his Lightsaber, and under Kallus' orders focused their attack on him. Again they failed to capture the Rebels after they escaped with the Wookiees.
The rebels were later forced to deal with Thrawn's personal contingent of Stormtroopers, who bore his unique emblem, aboard his Star Destroyer the Chimaera during an attempt to extract Kallus, who had become the new Fulcrum.
- In most of their appearances, especially the Star Wars Rebels series, Stormtroopers have been depicted as being rather slow, dim and incompetent despite their reputation as fierce and precise soldiers. This is similar to the battle droids of the Clone Wars series, who often exhibited humourous stupidity in most of their appearances. Pablo Hidalgo has clarified that this isn't a universal case and that there are Stormtroopers of varying skill/proficiency levels, citing the capability of Darth Vader's 501st Legion as compared with the low level security troopers seen aboard the Death Star in A New Hope.
