Upon returning to Yavin 4, the Ghost crew had been called to meet Mon Mothma in the control room. They received a transmission from Ryder Azadi on Lothal two days ago. Before transmission was cut off, Ryder reported that the Empire was beginning trails on a new version of their TIE Defender. Mothma understood well of the threat the TIE Defender had against the Rebellion. If there was a new development of these fighters, the Rebellion would need to know. She volunteered Ezra Bridger to take this assignment, and he accepted along with the rest of the Ghost crew. Before sending them off, Mothma warned them that the occupation on Lothal had been reported to be a complete lock down. Even if they made it in there was no guarantee the Rebellion could extract them.
Their plan was to get Cikatro Vizago to smuggle them pass the Imperial blockade over Lothal in exchange for some Puffer Pigs. Upon arrival, they discovered the condition on Lothal had got even worse. Vizago got them pass the blockaged, but the Imperials had scanned the Rebels on board. Upon reaching the surface, which now looked like a wasteland, Vizago's ship was escorted to Jalath City where the Imperials attached a gravity lock and sent in a search crew. Certain they had been discovered, the Rebels managed to avoid capture by using the Puffer Pigs to create a diversion, leaving Vizago to handle the Imperials. The Rebels escaped into the city, and decided to split up. Ezra, Sabine, and Chopper headed for Old Jho's to make contact with Ryder, while Kanan, Hera, and Zeb arranged some transportation.
The Rebels found the streets completely deserted. Nobody, except for Stormtroopers, were out and about. Ezra, Sabine, and Chopper made it to Old Jho's Pit Stop, and discovered it was now under Imperial management. To avoid any superstition, Ezra and Sabine went in to buy themselves a drink, and met Baron Valen Rudor, who now owned the bar after Jho was executed for trying to help a group of Rebels escape. Listening to Ruder take pleasure over what happened to old Jho pushed Ezra to nearly lashing out, only for Sabine to drag him away. However, they forgot to pay for their drinks and were halted by Stormtroopers. Then some stranger showed up, pretending to be an old friend. He paid for their drinks, and escorted Ezra and Sabine outside, where he revealed himself to be Jai Kell from the Imperial Academy. Ryder sent him to meet up with Ezra. He was going to call for a pick, but then Kanan, Hera, and Zeb arrived with a speeder. However, they were cut off by Imperial tanks that destroyed their speeder, forcing them to retreat into the sewers. The Imperials dispatched probe droids to track them.
The Rebels eventually became lost in the maze of tunnels, and the probe droids soon caught up with them. The Rebels split up. Everywhere they went there were probe droids and Stormtroopers. Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper got lost again, and a frustrated Ezra did not feel he could find his way on Lothal anymore. He blamed himself for pushing his friends into coming back, and started to agree on what Gerrera said before. He did not want to believe it, but it was clear to him that Lothal was already lost to the Empire. Sabine and Zeb assured him that the fight is not over yet, and if this were to be the end for them at least they would go down fighting. Just then, Sabine noticed her symbol painted on the walls. Suspecting that Ryder left them a trail to follow, they went where the symbols were pointing. They arrived at the main junction where they regroup with Hera, Kanan, and Jai. The Empire cornered them, but the Rebels escaped up a ladder and through a hatch, where Ryder was waiting for them. They escaped aboard a U-Wing, and headed for Ryder's base.
